Propane offers a good alternative to gasoline generators for home use. Propane gives the versatility in emergency backup power situations as there is not a need to have a flammable can of gas on hand at all times.
Propane gas cylinders are easy to store and are easy to find almost anywhere. This can be critical in the aftermath of a major storm when gas stations may not have power to run the pumps. Propane generators make excellent emergency backup power generators for the home or for everyday use when the cord just won’t reach.
When purchasing a propane generator it is usually a good idea to understand the differences between gasoline and propane. While each performs well, there are some fundamental differences that one should be aware of.
For example, gasoline offers more BTUs per gallon than Propane. Not a huge difference, the ratio being 1.36 gallons of propane to equal one gallon of gas but still enough of a difference to have a slightly less run time per unit of propane than gasoline. This can be easily offset by using a larger tank.
Many generators come with a pressure regulator and a long hose, so almost any size tank can be used. This includes the large home tanks that require fill up via a service.
The other aspect to propane is that as the temperature decreases the pressure in the tank decreases as well and can make starting sometimes difficult in freezing weather. To prevent this, open the valve slowly and allow the gas to enter the generator combustion chamber to capacity before starting, instead of just opening the valve and attempting to start the unit. It only takes an extra minute but makes it easier to start in cold weather.
